How to be gender-neutral in a foreign language
English-speakers have it easy
In some languages, trying to communicate in a gender-neutral way can stump even proficient linguists. In English the pronouns “they” and “them” have been adopted to refer to non-binary people, but for the 40% of the world’s languages that use grammatical gender—where nouns are assigned to gender categories–it’s not as simple.
