The fall of Yevgeny Prigozhin

The mercenary leader’s death shows there are no limits to Putin’s ruthlessness

Yevgeny Prigozhin has been reportedly killed in a plane crash near Moscow, exactly two months after he led a mutiny against Vladimir Putin’s regime. As the figurehead of Wagner—a shadowy mercenary group that executes Russia’s dirty work—Mr Prigozhin played an important role in the Ukraine war—his soldiers were used to pad out Russia’s severely depleted forces. Although the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, many see the hand of Mr Putin in his sudden demise.
